The Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, 2025, stands as a monumental confluence of faith, culture, and spirituality. This year, however, the holy gathering has also become a shining beacon of sustainability, blending ancient traditions with modern eco-conscious practices. One of the most noteworthy initiatives is the creation of changing rooms entirely made from recycled plastic by econscious®, a trailblazing plastic recycling startup based in India, as part of Coca-Cola's "Maidan Saaf" campaign. Through this campaign, company is trying to showcase innovative recycling practices and encourage people to take small yet impactful steps toward reducing waste.

By recycling over 550 kilograms of plastic waste with each changing room, these changing rooms not only address environmental concerns but also provide a safe and hygienic space for pilgrims, especially women.

Historically, women attending the Mahakumbh have faced challenges due to the lack of adequate changing facilities. Many had to resort to makeshift arrangements, compromising their comfort, privacy, and dignity. The introduction of these eco-friendly changing rooms has been a transformative step, ensuring a secure and respectful environment for women. This initiative underscores the importance of addressing gender-specific needs while promoting sustainability.

These thoughtfully designed changing rooms not only provide convenience to millions of pilgrims but also showcase the innovative potential of repurposed waste. By turning discarded plastic into functional facilities, econscious® and the Mahakumbh set an inspiring example of how sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into large-scale events. Each changing room is a testament to the possibilities of recycling, creating a meaningful impact while addressing a critical environmental issue.

Other initiatives further underscore the commitment to sustainability. Single-use plastics have been banned, replaced by reusable steel plates, glasses, and cloth bags under the “One Plate, One Bag” initiative. Waste segregation and composting units ensure effective recycling, while solar-powered lamps and water heaters highlight the use of renewable energy. Cleanup drives and water treatment plants maintain the sanctity of the Ganga and Yamuna, offering pilgrims a pure and pollution-free experience.

Additionally, eco-friendly transportation options, such as electric buses and rickshaws, reduce congestion and minimize air pollution. Free water-refilling stations encourage the use of reusable bottles, and tree plantation drives add a touch of green to the sacred grounds. Workshops and cultural programs weave environmental awareness into the spiritual fabric of the Kumbh.

As the Maha Kumbh 2025 unfolds, it serves as a powerful reminder that spirituality and sustainability can walk hand in hand. The recycled plastic changing rooms stand out as a symbol of this harmony, blending faith with forward-thinking environmental responsibility. Every prayer offered here echoes a pledge to protect the planet, making Maha Kumbh 2025 not only a journey of the soul but also a step toward a sustainable future.
